PEACE – Pact for Education, Active Citizenship and Engagement

Goal of the Project

The project seeks to empower small municipalities across the EU to become proactive agents of peace by promoting social inclusion, equality, cohesion and active citizenship. The project partners recognise the unique challenges and opportunities these municipalities face and aim to provide local authorities and key actors such as civil society organisations, education providers, libraries and museums with the tools, knowledge and other information needed to support active citizenship including common European values and democratic participation. The study of Learning Cities from the UNESCO Global Civic Education and Inclusion cluster of cities will provide case studies and information on best practices related to civic education for peace in communities. The Council of Europe Reference Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture will provide for a pool of relevant competences that support cohesion and active citizenship that the project aims for.

Project Outcomes

The project will deliver:

  1. a set of case studies on civic education for peaceful communities;
  2. a PEACE Reference Framework for municipalities and recommendations (guidelines) for specific measures;
  3. a PEACE Cities Manifesto and guidelines for the sustainability of results;
  4. an educational platform with all the related resources.

The project’s ambition is to come up with practical and existing proposals for civic activities that support cohesion and inspire smaller municipalities to become CITIES OF PEACE.

Gamification of Geological Education in European Geoparks – GAMEGEO

Project Objective:

The main goal of the project is to innovate and expand geological and environmental education with new digital forms that will increase interest in the natural and cultural heritage of the region.

Other objectives:

  • innovation of interpretation tools for information and visitor centres
  • initiation of cooperation between geoparks
  • methodological materials to assist in the creation of new geoparks in the EU and also for their operation
  • establishment of an educational platform with the materials for the public, educators and professionals.

Project starting point: (the problem for which we have decided to implement the project)

Knowledge of the local landscape, its geological processes and geological evolution, and the ability to interpret it in context, is completely lacking in the educational programmes offered nowadays in geoparks. The information about geology is very important in forming our view of our environment. Without the knowledge of geological processes, we may not understand fully the way of evolution of the animals and plants (fauna and flora) in the area. The ignorance of the basic principles of nature conservation results of a lack of the knowledge needed to make broader connections. We have thus discovered a white space in adult education that geoparks, in terms of their mission, can fill. Therefore, the aim of our project is to enrich the offer of adult education with an innovative interactive format that will at the same time meet the priorities of the Erasmus+ programme.

Target groups:

The main target group is the general public, which includes not only adults but also parents with children.

Secondary groups are:

  • Seniors – adults over 60, a non-homogeneous group that focuses on tourism, cultural sights, relaxation
  • Educators
  • Stakeholders – local residents
  • High school and university students
  • Professionals – geopark staff, i.e. geologists, palaeontologists, conservationists, amateur researchers, tour operators (outdoor)

Outcomes:

a) GeoEduGame (GEG) platform – an interactive online portal providing adult education in geology, palaeontology and other natural sciences in a playful way. The portal will include an e-learning course in partners’ languages, including English, gaming and fun learning elements and augmented reality

b) Geolocation application aimed at presenting selected sites. It will be implemented in the partners’ languages and in English.

(c) Supporting the promotion of visitor centres and educational spaces through innovation and digitisation contained in the IC toolkit

(d) A cookbook (manual) for running a successful geopark, showing the methodology and process of establishing a geopark, its development, stabilization and the vision of how to participate in the UNESCO Global Geoparks

e) Geo-walks as part of dissemination activities

Funding:

The project is implemented within the Erasmus+ Programme, Cooperative Partnerships in Adult Education (KA220-ADU). Grant 2023-1-CZ01-KA220-ADU-000166032. The total budget amounts to € 400 000, for AINova as a partner 50 000 €. The project period is 36 months, starting on 1 November 2023 and ending on 31 October 2026.

Local Adult Education Policy – LEAP II

Project Goal:

The specific objectives of the project are:

To empower the local level of governance, to tackle the sustainability issues through increasing their “green/sustainability skills”.

To empower the educational ecosystem to work towards sustainability issues by increasing their “green/sustainability skills” and providing tools for developing “green / sustainability skills”.

To facilitate the adoption of Learning Cities concepts in smaller scale through concrete examples and recommendations.

Background:

It is said that in times of big social changes, people turn to education and learning. Nowadays more than any other time before, the adult learning and education are mentioned as tools for the big changes of our times – climate, aging, globalisation, digitalisation. The COVID-19 pandemic and the digital and green transitions have accelerated changes in how we live, learn and work. People need to update their knowledge, and skills and to cope in a rapidly changing world. Adult learning benefits individuals and it also contributes to improving social cohesion and promotes active citizenship. Adult learning has been identified as a focus topic of the European Education Area for the period 2021-2030. The goal in this area is for 60% of all adults should be participating in training every year by 2030. In spite of it, too few people across Europe participate in regular education, for a variety of reasons. The right to education, training and lifelong learning is enshrined in the European Pillar of Social Rights (principle 1). One of the key policies at the EU level is the European Green Deal, which responds to climate change and tries to mitigate its effects. For several years, project partners have been involved in the implementation of EU policies from the intergovernmental level to the local level, where they can really influence and benefit citizens.

Target Groups:

The primary target group of the project are local authorities (of smaller cities).

The secondary target group is the citizens – the addresses of the efforts to raise the green skills.

Results:

The main project results are:

Case Studies on Education for Sustainability in Learning Cities to provide concrete examples to local authorities on how to build green skills.

LEAP II Platform with Series of Micro-learning materials on green skills to create learning opportunities for all citizens and generations.

Manual and recommendations for building of (small scale) Learning Cities to help spread the Learning City concept and contribute to raising awareness of the importance and benefits of LLL.

Learning Fwd 21

Project Goal

The main goal of the project is to create forward-looking learning centres, FLLC, (in two regions of the project partnership, Rijeka Region (HR) and Small Carpathians Region (SK)) and support inclusive local/regional learning environments, open and accessible to a diverse community of adult learners. The centers will be “virtual” and will offer flexible and innovative learning modules easily adaptable to both online and offline versions. The non-formal learning modules will build green competences and citizenship competences of the local/regional adult learners along with transversal skills: language skills (CLIL) and critical thinking.

Background

The motivation for designing the project lies in the fact that the numbers of adult learners in Slovakia as well as in Croatia are very low. The awareness of adult learning and education benefits and potential is also at low level, including among local authorities that do not perceive this agenda to be a part of their educational or development policies. This leads also to virtually non existing cooperation of educational players on local or regional levels. Preliminary research confirmed a clear need of competence building in lifelong learning in general, for adults as well. The civic education and green competences are crucial and there are not sufficient opportunities to acquire them. The fast development of new learning tools and digital means has opened up a number of opportunities.

Target Groups

The primary target groups of the project are regional AE providers within the two target regions Rijeka Region (HR) and Small Carpathians Region (SK).The project aims to pilot a new approach of collective impact that is based on intentional networking among AE providers/practitioners, identifying common agenda and common goals, collecting data, undertaking joint training, coordinating joint approach to regional stakeholders (local governments, regional governments, schools, NGOs etc.), open and regular communication focused on building trust. The end beneficiaries of our project include diverse target groups of adult learners inhabiting the target regions: Rijeka Region (HR) and Small Carpathians Region (SK) who will benefit from the accessible, inclusive, adaptable and future oriented learning environment.

Outputs and results:

  • Network of institutions as a centre of 21st century education
  • Digital Platform (information and e-learning platform)
  • Learning Moduls (hybrid education): 1. Green competences, 2. Civic competences with a focus on I. Civic participation, II. Project thinking, III. Media literacy.

Local Adult Education Policy – LEAP

Project Goal:

The general  objective of the project is to contribute to attaining the target of 15% participation rate of adults in learning as stated in strategies Europe 2020 and Education&Training 2020. Project LEAP is targeting local authorities to empower them to i) understand and appreciate the importance of the adult education issues and ii) be prepared to draft local adult education (and/or skills) strategies.

Those interested in adult education policy on local level, please join us at EPALE Community of Practice

Background:

The low participation rates of adults in learning activities are seen across a number of EU countries. In many cases it applies that increasing participation in adult learning requires a policy framework that is well co-ordinated. In order to encourage adults to participate in learning and education over their life course, the importance of adult learning, as well as a clear definition of what it is, needs to be acknowledged across all levels of government and society. To effectively address the need of strengthening the governance system, we need to strengthen the local level of governance which is closest to the citizens. To do so, better policies on adult education need to be promoted.

Target Groups:

  • The primary target group are local decision-makers, council members, staff of local authorities, ie those who will be drafting a policy.
  • Stakeholders are the adult education ecosystem stakeholders such as education providers, learning centres, cultural centres, civic society, employers who have vested interests in having a good policy. They need to understand the issues and cooperate with policy makers in order to set up a functioning and effective policy.
  • The beneficiaries will be the general public who will be given quality learning opportunities.

Project Activities and Results:

The project activities revolve around four intellectual outputs that are to be implemented:

IO1: LEAP Platform and Community of Practice (Open Educational Resource) on www.leap2local.eu

IO2: Trends & Dynamics in AE local policy making (Research)

IO3: AE Policy Making Tools for Local Authorities (Training and Piloting)

IO4: “How to” Guide for local policy makers (Guidelines for a policy)

Financing:

The project is implemented in the framework of the Erasmus+ Lifelong Learning Program, KA2 – Strategic Partnerships. The budget is EUR 288 647. The project period is 24 months, starting in November 2020 and ending in October 2022.
